12 in 11

I joined the 11 in 11 quilt along over on craftster this year. If I count a couple of small -- but almost entirely hand stitched -- I managed to complete 12 quilts. The last two were Christmas gifts. I was still stitching in the car on the way Christmas Day, but they were done and wrapped in time.

The first one is a whole fabric quilt.

This was done with simple line stitching using a walking foot along the lines on the block. It went together in a couple hours. The backing and the binding were stash fabrics. There wasn't quite enough of the star and moon fabric. I pieced in a couple bits of dark blue and orange.

The second is the quilt that did not want to be made. I started with the bug fabric about 12 years ago. It was going to be a simple strip quilt. However, the strips kept cutting crooked. So We put it aside.

About 2 years ago, I got out the fabric, added in a bunch more and tried to do a stack and whack quilt. I couldn't figure out how to trim and finish it so I put it aside.

I needed a gift this year so I hauled it out again. Trimming the blocks, I ended up with one too small.

So I had to put in a turquoise solid. Then I didn't have enough of the bug fabric so I put in the block of spots. After the whole thing was pieced, I found an entire yard of the bugs. Ugh! Then it was just too wide for the backing so I had to piece the backing. The backing was just the right size. But... when it was basted and tied it was off by 1/4 inch on one corner.

Piecing the binding was one ripping session after another. But the final joint was the best one I ever did.

Go figure!
