The Giveaway is officially closed. The winner will be announced on Saturday. Thanks for visiting.
I am offering a piece of hand dyed/painted 100% cotton muslin. It measures 11 inches by 36 inches. The colors are purple, turquoise and fuschia. Some sections of the panel are vibrant. Others are more muted.
Sunpainted fabric uses a technique discovered in the South Seas. Paint is applied to the fabric. Leaves and other decorative objects are placed on to it and it is left to dry. The sun works its magic and impressions are left behind.
The sun works its magic and impressions are left behind. The colors are heat set and hold up well to washing. I have a t-shirt I've been wearing and washing for almost 10 years now and it still looks vibrant.
To win this fabric, you will need to answer a simple question for me. It is something I've struggled with for a while now. My grandmother always made a distinction between quilts and comforters. Quilts were pieced or appliqued and hand quilted. Quilts were made for special occasions. Comforters were usually simple blocks sewn together. They were tied with yarn and made for every day use. Everyone of us has one special quilt and a stack of comforters.
Now-a-days on the internet I see a lot of tied "quilts". They are beautifully pieced tops. Often they have complex patterns. Yet they are tied. Given my background, I want to call them comforters rather than quilts. (Let me clarify. I am not drawing some sort of snobby distinction between the two. I think that anything that is pieced is a beautiful work of art. I have certainly made a lot of tied quilts and called them that. The spuds actually prefer tied to quilted because they say they are softer and snuggle better. I am simply wondering if there is a technical or general distinction between the two and if it matters.)
What I want to know is if there is a difference between the two? Is it still a quilt if it is tied or is a comforter? Does it matter? Does anyone care? Weigh in in the comments. Entries will stay open until 3pm Central time on May 25. I will choose a winner as soon after that as I am able. (I will choose the winner by random.)
Thanks for stopping by and thanks to Sew Mama Sew for setting this giveaway in motion.
(Two quick points of clarification added.)
I am by no means an expert in sewing or quilting, in fact I've never even made a quilt. However, I have a very special quilt that was given to me by Project Linus while I was spending time in the hospital when I was younger. I have always called it a quilt and not even thought there was a difference because it was tied with yarn. To me, a quilt is something that is hand made for you by someone else......a comforter you can buy at the store. Of course my opinion means diddly-squat, but I thought id share it anyways!!
ReplyDeleteI think in order for it to be a quilt it actually has to be quilted together in some way. That being said, I love the comfy tied together blankets too and I wouldn't disparage them at all!
ReplyDeleteA quilt to me is something that is handmade and a comfort is something mass produced. Just my option of course. I don't think it matters if a quilt is hand tied or hand quilted or machine quilted.
ReplyDeleteI think a comforter is think beading that doesn't reach the ground when you put it on the bed. A quilt is much thinner and is sewn together with lots of pieces in a pattern. I don't think tieing has anything to do with whether something is a quilt or not. But that's just me!
ReplyDeleteA quilt is something that is stitched through 3 layers; A top fabric, a batting and a bottom fabric. A comforter can be stitched as in a down comforter, but I believe they tend to stitched in rows to create channels and the down or other material is blown into the channels/rows. Tying is just a way of securing the layers together, but it is not technically a quilt, although I suppose it can be a comforter. I hear people all the time refer to quilts as "blankets" too, and I cringe with that term.
ReplyDeleteHello, Interesting question. I think a quilt by defination has to be quilted together usually by stitching and is on the thinner side. I think of a comfortor as something that is fluffier and the stitching or tieing is farther apart; you often see these in rows or large blocks. Thanks for the chance to win your lovely fabric. Linda
ReplyDeleteI refer to all of them as quilts -- not sure if it is right or not but love them all:)
ReplyDeleteTo me, a comforter is a filling with a detachable covering. A quilt, tied or not, has to have some kind of quilting or piecing together. Example: Lots of patches pieced together make a top, which is then layered with batting and a backing. It is then quilted or tied.
ReplyDeletetrilliumcreates AT gmail DOT com
Hmmm. I don't know the answer to that. I've always thought of a quilt as having three layers with lots of stitching and comforters...something you buy in a Dept. Store. At any rate...your fabric is luscious!
ReplyDeleteI always think of comforters as something that are more plush. Though, there are some plush quilts... hmmm...

I call them all quilts-- I don't know if that's right or not but doesn't really matter to me. :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I don't think of a comforter as something made by someone, but as something purchased. To me, if it's pieced, it's a quilt.
ReplyDeleteThis fabric is lovely. What a cool technique!
To me; a comforter is bought in the store..like a bed in a bag....I guess it is just what you are brought up with.
ReplyDeleteA quilt to me is something handmade and usually large like a bed sized item. When I hear comforter I think of something you'd give to a child and they grow up with it. =D
ReplyDeleteI'm hosting a new swap over at my blog if anyone is interested please pop over for a look =D
http://ibescheraldine.blogspot.co.uk/p/goodie-bag-swap.html
I have no idea what the rules are, but to me, a quilt is something I made, a comforter is something I bought at the store. I tie some and I quilt some, it depends on the look I want and the type of quilt, but I think tied quilts are wonderful, I love the prim look.
ReplyDeleteI also love your fabric, beautiful dying and shades.
Debbie
Beautiful piece of fabric!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it matters what it's called. I've always heard them called quilts whether it is tied or quilted.
call what you like but if it is hand made with love that is all that matters, enjoyed by any name will be as snugglie. :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't ever think that a tied quilt wasn't a quilt. Now I am curious!
ReplyDeleteI always thought the definition of a quilt was three layers: top, batting and backing. Tied or hand quilted or machine quilted -- to me they are all quilts. I agree with the first commentor that in my mind, a comforter is something you buy in a store and a quilt is made at home!
ReplyDeleteI thought a comforter was a big puffy thing you bought at the store and a quilt was handmade. I am no expert that is for sure though.
ReplyDeletekirkwood0419(at)hotmail(dot)com
To me if the top is pieced, sewn in any way it is a quilt. A comforter is just one large piece of fabric.
ReplyDeleteI have always considered a quilt to be a sandwich made up of a top (pieced or appliqued or wholecloth) and a batting and a backing. Am I right? I am not at all sure. Within our family, we often call tied quilts "utility quilts" just to separate them from quilted quilts. I have always preferred quilts that are tied, and are scrappy, but I would love to become proficient at machine quilting.
ReplyDeleteWow! Who knew? I thought a quilt was anything pieced with varied fabrics whether tied or not. The fabric is beautiful. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteto me a quilt is a lighter weight than a comforter..less batting or what not..idk :) raineoc@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteBefore I got "into" quilting ithought a tied blanket was a quilt. In fact my daughters baby blankets are tied. But since the quilting process is actually sewing the pieced top to the batting and back, I would assume that is only officially a quilt if it is "quilted" :)
ReplyDeletehmm I've often wondered these things myself. I call the one colour, tied ones comforters and if they are pieced and had some more work put into them (even if they are tied) I call them quilts. I really have no idea what makes one a comforter and one a quilt though.
ReplyDeleteHmm...it's not something I've thought a lot about! I think I've always considered quilts to be specially handmade and pieced with gorgeous fabrics while comforters were the poorer quality, dime a dozen things you could buy from Target or a homewares store.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard that distinction. I always thought that a pieced top = quilt.
ReplyDeletebeautiful! I usually think of anything with a pieced top as a quilt :)

I always thought of a comforter as something that was not colorful or different types of material. They always seemed to be one type of material, not blocks or scraps pieces like a quilt. I don't think it makes a difference, my son has one I made and tied and we called it a quilt. Thanks for the chance-looks amazing!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've always thought of a comforter as one big piece of material on each side. A quilt is pieced, whether it's tied or quilted!
ReplyDeleteThat fabric is beautiful! I kind of think of comforters and quilts in the same way - though I can see why some people might make a distinction.
ReplyDeleteTo me, before they hand quilted quilts, they tied them and still called them quilts. I think of a comforter as something as puffy without piecing or applique but I think the two words are fairly interchangeable. Often tied quilts are fabrics that are heavier and it was challenging to hand or machine quilt them. All quilts are of comfort to me...
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful piece of dyed fabric- it looks so rich.
Thanks for participating in the giveaway blog hop.
Regards,
Anna
If it's pieced, I think of it as a quilt. If it's one piece of fabric on each side of a filling, I think of it as a comforter (in my family's lexicon, duvets are a subset of comforters). If there's one layer of fabric it's a blanket.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't know and don't care, then again don't listen to me considering my quilting experience is only a tiny mini quilt. I appreciate the work that goes into each, comforter or quilt.
ReplyDeleteI think I consider them all quilts, regardless of the method of making them.
ReplyDeleteI've always called anything pieced a quilt. A comforter to me is two pieces of solid fabric with fluffy fat batting between them.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion a "Quilt" is something that is pieced while a comforter is basically 2 large solid pieces of fabric with batting between.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought of comforters as thicker, a much thicker batting which makes them fluffy and that's why they are tied, quilting would take away the loft.
ReplyDeleteI always think of it as a difference in use: A comforter is for beds, and quilts can be used for lots of different things.
ReplyDeleteinteresting distinction... I did not have a crafty family growing up and so to me anything that is pieced and is hand made and you sleep with it is a quilt... a little simple... maybe.... but that is what I think... thanks for a great giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteI always thought a comforter was a little thicker(puffier)than a quilt
ReplyDeleteI've always heard them referred to as "tied quilts" myself. To me a comforter is a thick and puffy batting.
ReplyDeleteTo me, a comforter is one large piece or a few large pieces with batting in the middle and maybe a few random stitches to hold everything in place. A quilt is anything that is fabric pieced together with stitches holding it in place, whether it be tied or lines of stitches... You buy comforters at walmart, quilts are handmade
ReplyDeleteWell, a quilt is handmade and unique but comforter is mass produce and the design repeated.
ReplyDelete:)
My favorite quilt that my aunt made me when I was little is hand-tied, so I never made a distinction. But then I heard that some people do. So when I make a blanket & tie it, I call it a comforter or a blanket. But the clerk at my LQS says I should call them quilts because some of the experienced quilters she knows make beautiful hand-tied quilts. So I really think it depends on the person.
ReplyDeleteBut what I really wanted to say is: OMG that fabric is gorgeous! I want to try sun-dyeing; I saw something about it last year but haven't tried it yet... xo
I'm in the UK and I've never heard the term comforter used here! so I call everything quilts!
ReplyDeleteI am also from the UK, and have never heard the word comforter either. They're all quilts to me!
ReplyDeleteI think when it is tied, it is considered a comforter. But that is a very good question!!
ReplyDeleteI always thought of a comforter as something heavy and tied rather than quilted. How it was made didn't matter. I used to make "comforters" from vintage sheets (not vintage at the time, just interesting). My grandmother made quilts. She referred to quilts as the thinner ones she had hand quilted. Comforters were heavy and tied.
ReplyDeleteI work for an organization that gives comforters (tied) as humanitarian aid and sells quilts (quilted) to raise money for our work.
ReplyDeleteThat is an interesting distinction!
DeleteI never really thought about it. When I think comforter, I think big, down stuffed bed covering. A quilt to me is either quilted or tied. Wonder what the dictionary says?
ReplyDeleteI've always thought a comforter was thick and short. A quilt is longer and covered the pillows.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue what the actual, correct distinction is...I've just always thought that if it was pieced, no matter if it was tied or quilted, it's a quilt. To me, a comforter is more of two solid pieces of fabric with batting, that are tied. I think it's kind of like calling a carbonated beverage "pop" or "soda"...it just depends on where you live and your background!
ReplyDeleteI define a quilt as something that has 3 layers top, bottom, and something you don't see in the middle. It can be tied or stitched. But then that's me. I also call them all blankets but had my hand slapped for not calling them all quilts I just call every thing quilts now.
ReplyDeletehttp://richardquilts.blogspot.com
I think it's still a quilt if it's tied.
ReplyDeleteI think it is the three layers that makes it a quilt, not whether or not it is stitched or tied.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I would call them both quilt--they are both layers of material that are secured together in some manner. To me, a comforter is a poofy thing that you buy at the store, with areas filled with something looser, like down or fiberfill rather than batting.
ReplyDeleteI always thought of a comforter as being a thicker top blanket on a bed. I thought for a quilt to be a quilt, it had to have a top, thin middle, and bottom layer quilted/sewn together throughout the fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your grandmother. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteIn Norway we also call them quilts - havn't heard about comforter.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be called a quilt.
ReplyDeletemframe00@gmail.com
Its still a quilt if it's tied, is perhaps the batting different in a comforter ?
ReplyDeleteYou have brought up a very interesting question but I have no idea what the answer is. I call anything that is pieced a quilt. I think of comforters as 2-5 large pieces of fabric sewn together. but I have seen "quilts" that have only a few pieces of fabric artfully put together. Food for thought thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'd say it has to be quilted to be a quilt - that seems sort of obvious to me. People often call a pieced top a quilt, but it's not - it's part of a potential quilt, but it's not a quilt! Just like it has to have been baked to be baked goods, it has to be dyed to be tie-dye, etc. Really very simple. (Some people - like the commenter before me! - have the opposite definition, saying anything pieced is a quilt... no. I suppose a wholecloth quilt wouldn't count for them, no matter how much quilting went on! Plus, if you're going to be literal... clothing's pieced, but very little clothing is quilted!)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny you bring this up because my grandmother also insist that any tied blanket pieced or not is a comforter not a quilt.
ReplyDeleteWell, despite having an English major for a sister, I'm not that particular, just seems too snobby for me--they're all a form of blanket, just different techniques used. A quilt generally has three layers hooked together in some manner (top, backing and a batting of some sort), but there's so much creativity out there, I'd hate to put quilts into a pre-defined box.
ReplyDeleteI would say they are both quilts. A comforter to me is a large bag of fluff like you buy at Bed Bath and Beyond.
ReplyDeleteTied quilts and quilted quilts are both quilts because they have plain cotton or wool batting in them. A comforter is filled with more fluffy stuff and is a lot thicker. It has less quilting lines on it.
ReplyDeleteIn my family quilts were anything that was pieced, and comforters were things that had all one piece of fabric on each side and they came from a store.
ReplyDeletebeth(dot)sebastian(at)gmail(dot)com
Beautiful fabric!! I don't think it matters LOL! I call comforters anything that is really high loft. Anything thinner, tied or quilted, I call a quilt.
ReplyDelete• • • I've wondered that too after I started quilting. From everything I've learned I think they are both considered quilts.
ReplyDeleteA comforter is just plainer than a quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love you question, different and fun. I see the difference being that a quilt is pieced whether it is tied, machine sewn or hand sewn and a comfortable is a large piece put together with another large piece (not small pieces of fabric together) and then tied or sewn together. Does that make sense??
ReplyDeletei have wondered if quilts are different form comforters .. not sure .. i like them being called 'quilts'
ReplyDeleteI've been told that tying quilts was done by quilting bees for many, many years. I think the term "quilted" is the act of sewing all three layers together. To me, a Comforter is a thick fluffy thing bought at a store.
ReplyDeletein my mind, a comforter is lest structured--the top being less pieced and mostly being tied, but sometimes just a solid top that is loosely quilted, and probably a fluffy polyester batt. a quilt, to me, is something with lots more detail in the top (and maybe the backing), most likely a cotton/silk/wool/bamboo batt and with either hand or machine quilting rather densely. everyone has their opinion, obviously from the comments. i've made both, but love making quilts now as they seem like major puzzles to be solved and i've always loved puzzles! thanks for the opportunity to win that beautiful piece of fabric. have a great day
ReplyDeleteIn my family anything pieced is a quilt.
ReplyDeleteTo me a quilt is pieced together. It is carefully made and stitched using different fabrics. A comforter is something I would buy at a store that is mass-produced. Nothing against comforters; I happen to love them :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I really love that fabric :)
I think that a comforter is more like a whole cloth, thick bedding. And a quilt can be tied or hand or machine quilted. And it is usually put together with many pieces for the top.
ReplyDeleteI view a comforter as massed produced and shouldn't be considered a quilt.
ReplyDeleteEither way I get to cover myself in fabric Yum Thin=quilt fuller = comforter
ReplyDeleteI have no idea - sorry.
ReplyDeleteI always thought a comforter was smaller than a quilt. Or a bought item and quilt was handmade!
ReplyDeleteI don't know, you don't hear the term comforter much nowadays.
I think comforters are bought and quilts handmade.
ReplyDeleteThis is what I think, if it's has a simple pieced top with no quilting design but is hand tied every so often, then it's a comforter. If it's pieced, has a machine or hand quilted/stitched design on it and may also be hand tied at certain intervals, then it's a quilt.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother called small quilts and blankets comforters, just big enough to snuggle round your shoulders for vwarmth and comfort
ReplyDeleteI think a comforter is fuller and has stuffing inside it, whereas a quilt is thinner, with no stuffing, and usually has more intricate stitch work.
ReplyDeleteI only think of fluffy blankets as comforters. anything with pieces, stiched together and thin...as in back, batting, top = a quilt...poufy ones ---that have fiberfill or something in them...comforters. I'm not sure if that's correct though. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I always thought a comforter had polyfill in it and was machine made, but I really don't know the correct answer. However, I am in LOVE with your fabric so I wanted to rely so I could have a chance to win it. That is so beautiful. Thanks for offering some as a prize!
ReplyDeleteI have always thought of the hand tied ones as blankets, a comforter is a large-unadorned blanket for your bed, and a quilt is handmade with lots of love and with peices of fabric sewed over batting. ??
ReplyDeleteI guess I always thought of a comforter as filled with feathers and not patch worked like quilts.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your grandmother. Quilts to me are actually quilted. Comforters are the ones with the yarn to tie them together. But as long as they are handmade with love I don't really care what people call them. :)
ReplyDeleteI would still call it a quilt even if it was tied , it is just a different method of holding the layers together . I love the fabric and thanks for the chance to win it.
ReplyDeleteI don't really care. Comforters always came from a store like jcpenny's and were one big piece of fabric with an edge. quilts are usually hand made and made of pieces.
ReplyDeleteMy family always makes wedding quilts (each woman makes a square in the bride's chosen colors). Back when all us cousins were little, the quilt was always tied - stretched on a frame, the moms stood and pushed a needle through, then us kids sat underneath and poked it back up. Now, the mother-of-the-bride tends to pay to have it long arm quilted. I think it was more of a time issue in our case. Though I do prefer the quilting to the tying!
ReplyDeleteIt doesnt matter to me, I think either one pieced is cozy and beautiful funnymesjc@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI think of a comforter as being mass-produced and filled with polyfil or down. A quilt, to me, is pieced and quilted, a tied quilt is pieced and tied. But that's just me!
ReplyDeleteI think that piecing is what makes a quilt a quilt!
ReplyDeleteI think of a comforter as being bulkier than a quilt. Great giveaway!
ReplyDeletehum, a comforter stuffed with high loft poly batting vs a quilt with low-loft, usually cotton batting--quilts are either quilted (by hand or machine) or tied and comforters are either tied or machine quilted.
ReplyDeleteQuilts are special whether they are tied or not as long as there rare at least 3 layers.
ReplyDeletea quilt has more stitches than a comforter.
ReplyDeleteI never gave it any thought, they were all quilts. Interesting to read some of the other opinions on the subject. Thanks for the chance to win some awesome fabric.
ReplyDeletei am just a quilt learner but it is beautiful thanks for the giveaway
ReplyDeleteI think anything handmade should be treasured, no matter what we call them.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabric!
ReplyDeleteI really don't know either... But I always think "quilt" if it is pieced. But then, life is too short to worry too much about. =] A very good point though.. I'll have to ask my sister what she thinks. =]
Thanks!

I've never thought about it to me a quilt is a thing that gives you a feeling of comfort and warmth so what ever gives you that should be your quilt.
ReplyDeleteI am no expert but what were called comforters when I was a child were more like what we call duvets nowadays. Thanks for a chance at your giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI never realized there was debate about comforter vs quilt. In my world we called pieced handmade items quilts and comforters are the fluffy store bought blankets put n beds. Beautiful fabric, thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteTo me either sewn or tied is a quilt, but they are thin, and the top is pieced... comforters generally are thick and puffy and filled with poly and can either be stitched, or tied, but generally not pieced, just a solid top and coordinating backing.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of comforters before. I just sew Quilts :)
ReplyDeleteSusanne
Now this is interessting ... English is not my native language so I never get it really right and now I'm really lost ... so many opinions what what is ...
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway...what gorgeous fabric.
ReplyDeleteTo me...a comforter is where the top piece is one solid piece of fabric, it is filled with polyfil and is stitched on the top.
A quilt is where the top piece is made using many different pieces of fabric that are sewn together, and the back of the quilt is one solid piece, but is not filled with poly.
That's just my opinion, and not sure if it makes sense...haha!
Thanks so much for the chance to win1

I think you may be right in your thinking but to me a comforter is a big puffy, fluffy filed thing you put on your bed. A quilt is pieced and has batting in the middle and then quilted or tied.
ReplyDeleteYour fabric qiveaway is beautiful!!!
To me, a comforter is big and puffy, and a quilt is thinner - but they can both be awesome!
ReplyDeleteI always thought they were both quilts, but if pressed really think that quilts are pieced, and thinner. Thanks for the chance!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the comforter vs quilt. My grandmother called quilts what she pieced and quilted with a running stitch to keep the layers from shifting. A comforter she called just a blanket (unpieced) with stuffing???
ReplyDeletethanks
staceysgroups(at)gmail(com)
Hmmm... I always thought comforters were more like duvets (big and bluffy and mainly just two big sheets of fabric with fluffy stuff between).
ReplyDeletewinterwrens at gmail dot com
My thoughts are that anything pieced is a quilt - whether it's tied or quilted. And anything that's quilted (whole cloth quilt) is a quilt. Comforters are one big piece of fabric on either side and most importantly are usually comercially made and purchased from a store.
ReplyDeleteThe fabric you are giving away is AWESOME. Thanks for the chance to win.
i'm with the group that is saying comforters are what you buy - you can remove the cover to wash the cover and air the "filler" part. to me a quilt is something that is pieced and and has some sort of sewing tieing it together. what a great giveaway you are having!
ReplyDeleteD'aww I'm sorry I have no idea! Fortunately you have many great answers! Anyways thank you for the post! ^^
ReplyDeleteI always thought there was a difference between comforters and quilts too. Quilts being anything that is pieced. Comforters being one piece and really thick. But both are definitely different from blankets!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabric! Tied just doesn't seem like a quilt to me. More just a quickie blanket.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought about it, but your grand mother was right, How can a tied comforter be called a quilt when it isn't quilted??? I don't think it has any thing to do with piecing the fabric, but the quilting process
ReplyDeleteI think all handmade quilts or comforters are so very beautiful. It could be a case case of
ReplyDelete'a rose by any other name would smell as sweet'
I think of comforters are being poufier and quilts being flatter, less lift. Method of join doesn't matter so much !
ReplyDeleteI'd probably call them all quilts :S but I'm not an expert. A comforter to me is something shop-bought that is full of stuffing or batting and is all one piece with stitching across it.
ReplyDeletekate1485 at hotmail.com
i have absolutely no idea. this is a good question though. but like jasmine says i would say a comforter is bought and a quilt is hand made.
ReplyDeletequilting dash lady at comcast dot net
I dont think it matters. the only difference in my mind is teh fluffiness and the top stitching
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like to me the definition of a comfortor has changed over the years. I agree with most that it is something mass produced and it seems to usually be one big piece of cloth or maybe a few pieced together whereas a quilt is a treasure made by a person and is usually one of a kind. It is also 'quilted' either by machine or hand by the maker or someone they pay to do it for them.
ReplyDeleteamanda.echler[at]hotmail[dot]com
Hmmmmmm I've never really thought of it -- if I had to hazard a guess, I'd call it a quilt if it was handmade (tied or quilted - it doesn't matter). To me, a comforter is mass-produced store-bought bedding :D
ReplyDeleteHmm, when I think of comforters, I think of a purchased, loosely quilted blanket. Usually made with polyfill and quite thick. That help or confuse matters? :) Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI like your grandmother's distinction. I think she's right. Tied isn't quilted.
ReplyDeletemajorasue(at)hotmail(dot)com
I like your grandmother's distinction. Tied isn't quilted.
ReplyDeletemajorasue(at)hotmail(dot)com
I think there is definitely a difference, if only because a 'quilt' is 'quilted' (e.g. named after a particular technique which was used to attach the front to the back with batting in between), and something that is tied clearly isn't quilted.
ReplyDeleteSeems like it comes down to whether someone uses the piecing or the quilting as the distinction - in my opinion, even something that isn't pieced can be a quilt (there are crazy cool fullcloth quilts which aren't pieced but have an intricate quilted design).
LOVE that sub-printed fabric! It's such a cool technique.
Thanks for the opportunity to win! :)

ReplyDeleteWhat a great discussion. I will do my best to summarize in a post over the next couple days. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and commented. The giveaway is officially closed. Winners will be announced on Saturday.
ReplyDelete
